Day 1: Introduction to Drawing Materials and Techniques
Begin your artistic journey with an exploration of drawing tools and materials. Learn how to effectively use pencils, charcoal, and other media to create lines, textures, and values. Basic drawing techniques, such as contour drawing and shading, will be introduced to establish a solid foundation for the following days.
Day 2: Observational Drawing: Capturing Coastal Elements
Venture outdoors into the inspiring coastal landscape to engage in plain air drawing. Discover techniques to observe and sketch the unique features of the coast, including rocks, cliffs, waves, and vegetation. Focus on capturing accurate proportions, perspectives, and textures in your drawings, while immersing yourself in the natural beauty surrounding you.
Day 3: Light and Shadow: Enhancing Coastal Landscapes
Explore the interplay of light and shadow in coastal landscapes. Learn how to effectively render the effects of light on various surfaces, such as water, sand, and rocky formations. Experiment with techniques such as hatching, cross-hatching, and blending to create depth, form, and atmospheric effects in your drawings. An emphasis on seeing shapes and drawing tonally will help create success in the process.
Day 4: Composition and Creating a Sense of Place
Unlock the secrets of composition and discover how to create visually engaging drawings of coastal landscapes. Explore the principles of composition and learn how to arrange elements within your drawings to convey a sense of place. Dive into the art of establishing focal points and leading the viewer’s gaze through your artwork.
Day 5: Final Projects and Critique Session
Harness the skills and techniques you have learned throughout the course to create your own unique coastal landscape drawings. Spend the final day working on a personal project that showcases your newfound abilities. Conclude the course with a critique session, where you will receive valuable feedback and guidance to further refine your drawing skills.
Throughout the course, experienced instructor, Kat Logan, will provide demonstrations, one-on-one guidance, and group discussions to enhance your learning experience.
